Android users can now breathe a sigh of relief as Google has expanded the call recording feature within its Phone app to include Pixel 6 and newer models. While this update does not grant access to the latest AI functionalities, it provides a straightforward solution for those seeking a dependable method to record phone conversations.
Back in September, Google heralded this rollout as a “fundamentally useful feature,” emphasizing its value even in the absence of transcription or automatic note-taking capabilities. The utility of call recording is undeniable; it serves various legitimate purposes, from journalists documenting interviews to patients ensuring they accurately capture medical advice from healthcare providers.
The journey of call recording on Android, particularly on Google’s Pixel devices, has been anything but smooth. Once upon a time, users could freely download third-party call recorder applications. However, Google gradually restricted essential functionalities, such as blocking access to microphone recordings. In 2022, the company announced it would limit access to Android’s Accessibility API, which developers relied upon for their apps, effectively stifling the third-party call recorder market. Users found themselves at the mercy of their phone manufacturers; if call recording was not supported in the primary app, the feature was essentially rendered inaccessible.
With the introduction of Pixel 9 and Pixel 10, Google unveiled a feature known as Call Notes, which utilizes Gemini to transcribe and summarize calls. While these enhancements are impressive, they still include the ability to record calls, making these two Pixel series the only ones with this capability. Thus, the recent expansion of call recording functionality is a welcome addition.
Call recording on Pixel isn’t perfect
However, there are a couple of important considerations to keep in mind regarding this feature. Firstly, users should not expect to record calls without the consent of the other party. Even in regions where one-party consent is permissible, Google’s call recorder will announce the recording, ensuring that the other party is aware. This transparency may lead to discomfort, prompting the other party to end the call if they are not comfortable with being recorded.
Secondly, this feature will not be universally available to all Pixel users, even if they possess the appropriate device. It will only function in regions where call recording is legal. Google has indicated that it will roll out this capability to all eligible countries throughout the remainder of the year. As of now, users in the United States and Canada have access, while many other regions are still awaiting this feature. If you reside in a location where call recording is permitted but have yet to see this functionality, patience is advised, as it is likely on its way.

How to set up call recording on Pixel
To begin utilizing this feature, ensure you are using a Pixel 6 or newer device, operating on at least Android 14, or a non-Pixel device with a minimum of Android 9. Next, update your Phone app to the latest version.
Open the Phone app’s Settings, navigate to Call Assist > Call Recording. Here, you can activate the toggle next to “Turn on Call Recording.” Additionally, you have the option to enable “Automatically record calls with non-contacts,” which will initiate recording whenever someone outside your contacts calls you, or “Automatically record calls with these numbers” to select specific contacts for automatic recording.
You can also choose to delete recordings after seven, 14, or 30 days, or retain them indefinitely. Alternatively, if you prefer a more selective approach, you can opt to record calls on a case-by-case basis. During a call, simply tap the Call Assist button and select “Call Recording.” If this is your first recording, you will need to download some audio files before proceeding. Once you agree to record, a brief countdown will occur, followed by an announcement to all parties on the call. You can stop the recording at any time via the Call Assist menu, and your recordings will be accessible in the Home tab.
