Signal Is Testing The Ability To Add An Android Phone Or Tablet As A Secondary Device

Signal’s latest beta version introduces an exciting enhancement that many users are likely to appreciate: the ability to link an Android phone or tablet to an existing account as a secondary device. Currently, users must register a separate number to utilize the Signal app on two phones. However, this new feature allows for seamless access to a single account and synchronized chat history across multiple devices.

How to Link Your Devices

As reported by AboutSignal, the messaging service is actively testing this capability. Although still in beta, Signal has updated its support page to guide users on linking Android phones and tablets to their primary device. Previously, linking was limited to primary phones with iPads and computers.

To link a new Android phone or tablet to your account, follow these steps:

  • Download the Signal app from Google Play on your desired device.
  • On a phone, initiate the welcome process. When prompted for your phone number, tap the kebab menu in the upper right corner and select “Link device.”
  • On a tablet, simply look for the “Link your account” button on the welcome screen.

Once you proceed, your Android device will display a QR code labeled “Scan this code to link your account.” To complete the linking process, scan this code using your primary device by navigating to Signal Settings > Linked devices > Link a new device. You will then have the option to synchronize your chat history with the secondary device. If you opt out of synchronization initially but wish to enable it later, you will need to reinstall Signal on the device you want to link.

Enhanced User Interface for Tablets

In addition to the linking feature, AboutSignal has discovered that Signal has designed a split-screen interface specifically for tablets. This layout features a panel on the left displaying a list of chats alongside a larger panel for the active conversation. This new view is optimized for landscape mode, enhancing the user experience.

Moreover, users can customize their interface according to their preferences, such as removing the chat list if desired. While these features are currently in testing, Signal has not yet announced a timeline for broader availability.
