Microsoft’s ambitious initiative to allow Android users to purchase and play console games through the Xbox app has encountered a setback, attributed to the ongoing legal tussle between Google and Epic Games. In a recent update shared on BlueSky, Xbox president Sarah Bond revealed that the company is currently hindered from launching this new capability due to a “temporary administrative stay” granted by the courts.
Details of the Delay
Initially, Bond had expressed optimism about rolling out the feature, stating that Xbox players would be able to engage with games directly from the app starting in November, specifically targeting Android devices in the United States. “Our team has the functionality built and ready to go live as soon as the court makes a final decision,” she noted, emphasizing the company’s eagerness to enhance player choice and flexibility.
The legal complexities stem from the Epic Games vs. Google case, where Epic secured a favorable jury verdict last year. Following this victory, a judge mandated that Google must open its marketplace to alternative app stores and cease its requirement for developers to utilize Google Play Billing, which typically allows Google to retain a 30% share of all transactions. This ruling was set to take effect on November 1, but Google has since appealed and received a temporary stay, delaying any modifications to its mobile ecosystem.
Google’s Response
In response to the situation surrounding the Xbox delay, Google spokesperson Dan Jackson stated, “Microsoft has always been able to offer their Android users the ability to play and purchase Xbox games directly from their app – they’ve simply chosen not to.” He further articulated concerns regarding the court’s order, suggesting that a rushed implementation could compromise Google Play’s ability to maintain a secure user experience. “Microsoft, like Epic, are ignoring these very real security concerns,” he added, reiterating Google’s commitment to fostering an ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders, rather than just a select few major gaming companies.
Microsoft’s Mobile Aspirations
Despite this hurdle, Microsoft remains determined to broaden its mobile offerings. The company recently initiated a beta for a service that allows Xbox owners to stream their games on various devices, including smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Smart TVs. Additionally, Microsoft is in the process of developing a dedicated mobile store, which was initially slated for a summer launch but has now been postponed to an undetermined date as the company conducts further market research.
