Percona has forged a strategic alliance with HexaCluster, aiming to facilitate the transition of organizations from proprietary databases to open-source alternatives, particularly focusing on PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB.
Collaboration Details
This partnership synergizes Percona’s expertise in migration assessment and production support with HexaCluster’s advanced migration software, specifically designed for projects that involve diverse source and target database environments. The initiative targets enterprises that are looking to escape the financial burdens and complexities associated with commercial database platforms.
The migration process will be executed through Percona’s Expert Consulting and Services. Initial engagements will commence with a comprehensive assessment led by Percona, which will outline the migration’s scope and establish a clear path from source to target before any data is transferred.
This assessment aims to pinpoint necessary adjustments and minimize disruptions to ongoing business operations during the migration phase. Percona will oversee the planning and provide ongoing support for databases in production post-migration, while HexaCluster will contribute its software solutions for more intricate heterogeneous migrations.
Cost Pressure
The announcement arrives at a time when many organizations are reevaluating their long-standing database contracts and considering the operational risks associated with departing from established systems. Enterprises frequently discover that proprietary platforms become increasingly expensive at the time of renewal, yet they remain hesitant to migrate due to the perceived risks of altering core data infrastructure without specialized assistance.
This partnership is designed to offer customers a more transparent pathway away from vendor lock-in by integrating assessment, planning, and automated migration with robust support for open-source databases once they are operational. The targeted platforms specified in the agreement include PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB Community.
HexaCluster specializes in PostgreSQL migration and related services, providing tools tailored for complex workloads and facilitating transitions from proprietary and legacy systems to open-source alternatives. Their portfolio encompasses software for migration assessment, schema conversion, data migration, and live replication during the cutover phase. HexaCluster adeptly supports both heterogeneous migrations—such as moving from Oracle or SQL Server to PostgreSQL—and same-engine migrations across various database systems.
Division of Roles
In this collaboration, Percona will take the lead role for clients embarking on the migration journey. This includes defining project scope, conducting the initial assessment, planning the migration, and ensuring support for the database environment in production after the transition is complete.
HexaCluster’s contribution will focus on the software used in more technically challenging migrations that involve multiple source systems or destination environments. Together, the two companies aspire to deliver both advisory support and automation for organizations managing extensive or mixed database estates.
Louis Hood, Director of Global Partnerships and Channel at Percona, articulated the rationale behind this collaboration: “This partnership expands our portfolio to help organizations address steep proprietary database renewal costs and migration risks. Percona now simplifies the transition by leading assessment, planning, and automated heterogeneous migrations through a single team from evaluation to go-live. The result is lower-risk cost reduction without new vendor lock-in,” he stated.
Open Source Focus
Percona has consistently positioned itself around open-source database software, support, and services, aiming to empower organizations with greater control over their data infrastructure, free from reliance on a single software vendor. The company supports a variety of database systems, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Valkey, and Redis, and boasts two decades of experience with large database deployments. This partnership enhances its production support by linking it with HexaCluster’s migration software, creating a more comprehensive pathway from assessment to production.
HexaCluster emphasized that its tools are designed to modernize workloads transitioning to PostgreSQL. Founded by engineers behind Ora2Pg, an open-source Oracle-to-PostgreSQL migration tool, HexaCluster has also contributed to numerous PostgreSQL tools and extensions. Avinash Vallarapu, Chief Executive Officer at HexaCluster, remarked on the significance of the agreement: “We’ve spent years building Migration and Modernization tools that move complex workloads onto PostgreSQL. Partnering with Percona puts that work in front of the organizations that need it most, backed by a team that supports these databases in production every day,” he concluded.
