PostgreSQL database specialist Supabase snags $100M in funding

Five months following Databricks Inc.’s acquisition of a key competitor for billion, Supabase has successfully secured 0 million in late-stage funding aimed at developing a new database tool known as Multigres.

The Series E funding round, announced today, was spearheaded by Accel and Peak XV, propelling Supabase’s valuation to an impressive billion. This follows a previous funding round in April where the company raised 0 million, during which it revealed an installed base of over 2 million developers. In the latest announcement, Supabase reported that its developer community has now expanded to more than 4 million.

Supabase specializes in a tailored version of the widely-used PostgreSQL relational database, enhancing it with cybersecurity features, a content delivery network, and various usability improvements. Notably, the platform offers a robust suite of tools designed for artificial intelligence developers, which has likely contributed to its rapid user growth.

One of the challenges with standard PostgreSQL is its inefficiency in managing embeddings—mathematical structures that encapsulate the knowledge of AI models. To address this, Supabase has integrated an open-source tool called pgvector, enabling support for embeddings. These embeddings serve as compressed numerical representations of data, such as product descriptions, allowing developers to convert their business data into embeddings through a built-in application programming interface. This functionality can be managed using a Python client provided by Supabase, taking advantage of Python’s straightforward syntax for executing complex tasks with minimal code.

In addition to embeddings, Supabase’s AI toolkit includes Edge Functions, which empower developers to create serverless functions using JavaScript. This feature integrates seamlessly with Hugging Face, a cloud platform that hosts over 100,000 open-source AI models, enabling customers to process their stored embeddings efficiently.

Supabase’s AI capabilities are complemented by numerous enhancements to the core PostgreSQL feature set. Among these is a branching tool that allows developers to swiftly create copies of production databases. This branching functionality is also a significant selling point for Neon, a competing PostgreSQL distribution recently acquired by Databricks for a reported billion.

The latest funding will be directed toward developing an “enterprise-scale” version of Supabase’s platform, dubbed Multigres. To facilitate this initiative, the company has enlisted Sugu Sougoumarane, co-creator of the popular open-source technology Vitess, which enhances the scalability of relational databases by distributing them across multiple servers.

Supabase also intends to utilize this new capital for various other initiatives. Chief Executive Paul Copplestone noted in a blog post that the company has consistently allowed employees to sell 25% of their vested stock in every funding round, a practice that will continue with this round. Furthermore, the company is accelerating hiring for key open-source projects.

Looking ahead, Supabase plans to follow up this funding round with a million raise, which will be accessible to early customers and contributors to the open-source version of its platform.
