Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27858 (Canary Channel)

Hello Windows Insiders, today marks the release of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27858 to the Canary Channel. Notably, there are currently no plans to release SDKs for the 27xxx series builds.

Changes and Improvements

[Input]

  • A new system tray icon has been introduced on the taskbar, enhancing the discoverability of the emoji and more panel in Windows 11. This allows users to express themselves through emojis, GIFs, and Kaomojis across all applications. The familiar WIN + . keyboard shortcut is also highlighted within this panel. Users can customize the appearance of this new icon by right-clicking it to access the taskbar settings page.

Fixes

[General]

  • An issue that caused some Insiders to encounter a black screen during upgrades has been resolved.
  • Text disappearing in various system locations after the previous flight has also been fixed.

[File Explorer]

  • This release enhances accessibility in File Explorer, providing improved text scaling support across File Explorer, File Open/Save dialogs, and copy dialogs.

[Desktop icons]

  • The logic for apps pinned to the desktop has been updated, eliminating the accent-colored backplate for packaged apps. This change makes icons larger and more visible. Users may need to create new shortcuts for this update to take effect if they already have existing icons on their desktop.

[Input]

  • A fix has been implemented for an issue where voice typing would not initiate from the touch keyboard when using the Chinese (Simplified) narrow layout.
  • A high-impact crash related to ctmon.exe, which affected typing capabilities, has been addressed.

[Windowing]

  • An explorer.exe crash linked to snap layouts has been resolved, which previously occurred when dragging a window or hovering over the maximize button.

[Taskbar]

  • Fixed an issue where taskbar icons did not resize appropriately when the device was used in tablet mode.
  • Addressed a problem where focus through taskbar icons moved in the opposite direction when using Hebrew or Arabic as the display language while pressing WIN + T and arrow keys.

[Graphics]

  • An issue preventing night light functionality for some Insiders has been resolved.
  • A fix has been applied to address unexpected FPS caps experienced by some users in the previous flight.

[Network]

  • Mitigated an issue believed to have caused Wi-Fi connectivity problems for some Insiders following the last flight.

[Audio]

  • A fix has been made for an underlying issue that resulted in MIDI devices not being recognized in recent Canary flights.

[Other]

  • Resolved a bugcheck issue causing some Insiders to experience KERNELSECURITYCHECK_FAILURE after the previous flight.
  • Fixed a bugcheck issue related to SYSTEMTHREADEXCEPTIONNOTHANDLED that affected some Insiders post-update.
  • Addressed a problem where setting a desktop background to a JXR HDR wallpaper was ineffective for extra-wide formats (21×9).

Known Issues

[General]

  • [IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COPILOT+ PCs] Insiders joining the Canary Channel on a new Copilot+ PC from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel, or retail may encounter issues with Windows Hello PIN and biometrics, resulting in error 0xd0000225. Users can recreate their PIN by selecting “Set up my PIN.”
  • [NEW] An Administrative Templates error message may appear when opening the Group Policy Editor. Clicking OK will allow normal operation.

[Input]

  • [NEW] Pen input may be unresponsive on certain PCs equipped for inking.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel

  • The builds released to the Canary Channel showcase the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be interpreted as aligned with any specific Windows release. Features and experiences may evolve, be removed, or replaced based on feedback.
  • Many features in the Canary Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, beginning with a subset of Insiders and gradually expanding as feedback is monitored.
  • Some features may debut in the Dev and Beta Channels before appearing in the Canary Channel.
  • Localization for features in active development may not be fully completed; users are encouraged to report any localization issues via the Feedback Hub.
  • To exit the Canary Channel, a clean installation of Windows 11 is required. Insiders cannot switch to a channel receiving builds with lower build numbers without performing a clean installation due to technical requirements.
  • The desktop watermark visible in the lower right corner of the desktop is standard for these pre-release builds.
  • For a comprehensive overview of which builds are in which Insider channel, please refer to Flight Hub.

Thanks,
Amanda & Brandon
