Microsoft continues to integrate artificial intelligence across its product suite, reflecting a broader trend among leading tech companies. From Microsoft Edge to the Office suite, and even in foundational applications like Notepad and Paint, AI is becoming increasingly ubiquitous.

For those who prefer a more traditional computing experience without the constant presence of AI assistants, there are options to disable or hide these features. The following steps are tailored for users operating a Copilot+ PC with Windows 11 Home. While the exact features may vary based on your device’s specifications and Windows version, many settings will be similar.

Hide (or uninstall) Copilot

Copilot is preinstalled on Windows PCs and may even have a dedicated button on your keyboard. Designed to assist with queries and everyday tasks, it can be a helpful tool, but if it’s not needed, it can be easily removed.

To hide Copilot, simply right-click its icon on the taskbar and select Unpin from taskbar. This action will remove its shortcut from view. For further customization, navigate to the Copilot app, click on your Microsoft account picture in the bottom left corner, and select Settings. If the avatar is not visible, click the side panel button at the top left.

Once in the Copilot Settings, you can disable Auto start on log in to prevent it from launching with Windows. Additionally, you can toggle off the Open Copilot using Alt+Spacebar shortcut to avoid accidental activations.

For those seeking a more definitive solution, uninstalling Copilot is straightforward. Access the main Settings panel, select Apps > Installed apps, locate Copilot in the list, click the three dots next to it, and choose Uninstall.

Removing other AI features

AI features are not limited to Copilot; they are embedded throughout the Windows ecosystem. For instance, the Windows Recall feature utilizes AI to monitor activities on your PC, allowing you to search through them like a comprehensive browsing history.

Typically, Windows Recall is disabled by default on new installations, so you only need to turn it off if it has been activated previously. To check its status, go to Windows Settings: select Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots, where you can disable the feature if necessary.

Another AI feature, Click to Do, allows users to right-click on text and images for AI-assisted tasks, such as web searches. This feature can also be disabled via a toggle switch in the same Privacy & security section.

AI capabilities have also made their way into Notepad and Paint. In Notepad, access the settings by clicking the cog icon in the top right corner and toggle off the Copilot option to hide these features. Unfortunately, Paint currently lacks a similar setting, leaving users with the Copilot button on the toolbar, even if the main app is uninstalled. However, it is possible that this functionality may return in future updates.

As Microsoft continues to enhance its software with AI features, users are encouraged to regularly explore system and app options for the ability to disable or remove unwanted AI functionalities.
