KB5044400: Microsoft fixes Windows 11 Mica bug, brings Start menu changes, in Dev channel

Microsoft has unveiled its latest build for Windows 11 Dev channel Insiders, designated as Build 26120.2130 under KB5044400. This update addresses several bugs, including issues with Mica and clipboard history, while also introducing notable enhancements to the Start menu and more.

Changes and Improvements

The following changes and improvements are gradually being rolled out to the Dev Channel:

[Start menu]

  • The “All apps” section has been simplified to just “All” on the Start menu.

[Input]

  • A new Gamepad keyboard layout is being introduced for the on-screen keyboard, allowing users to navigate and type using their Xbox controller. This layout features button accelerators (for instance, the X button for backspace and the Y button for spacebar) and vertically aligned keys to enhance controller navigation.

[Narrator]

  • A new shortcut, “Narrator key + control + X,” has been added to copy the last spoken content to the clipboard. This follows the existing pattern of “Narrator key + X,” which repeats the last spoken phrase, aiding users in memorizing similar shortcuts.
  • Narrator will now automatically read the contents of emails in the new Outlook app, mirroring the functionality of the classic Outlook.

[Networking]

  • Users can now view UTF-8 encoded SSIDs when executing the netsh wlan show networks command. This enhancement ensures that Wi-Fi SSIDs featuring Unicode characters, such as emojis, are displayed correctly in the netsh output. This rollout is gradual, so not all Insiders in the Canary Channel will see it immediately.

Fixes Gradually Rolled Out

Alongside the new features, several fixes are also being implemented:

[General]

  • An issue affecting a small number of Insiders, where the login screen contents would fail to load after waking the PC from sleep, has been resolved.

[Input]

  • A fix has been applied to address an underlying issue that prevented clipboard history from displaying copied items.

[Taskbar]

  • A problem where pressing WIN + multiple times did not cycle through multiple open windows of an app has been corrected.

[Narrator]

  • Performance issues causing Narrator to slow down after prolonged use have been addressed. Users experiencing ongoing delays are encouraged to report them via the Feedback Hub.
  • An issue where Narrator would announce “contains style” when focusing on styled text across various applications has been fixed.
  • Additionally, some dialogs in Narrator were not adhering to the 200% text scaling setting in Windows, which has now been resolved.

[Live captions]

  • A crash issue affecting live captions for some users in the previous build has been fixed.

[Other]

  • A problem with Mica not functioning correctly during desktop slideshow presentations has been rectified.

Known Issues

[Taskbar]

  • [NEW] Investigations are underway regarding reports of explorer.exe crashing for some Insiders when hovering over specific open apps in the taskbar.

[Start menu]

  • Users may experience issues when clicking or tapping on a letter in the Start menu’s All apps list, causing it to break. A reboot or restarting explorer.exe may resolve this problem.
