Windows 11 PC experiences

This section highlights the new features and enhancements tailored for Windows 11 PCs, showcasing AI-driven capabilities, ongoing innovation, and performance upgrades.

  • [Emoji] New! The Emoji 16.0 release brings a thoughtfully curated selection of new emojis, with one from each major category now available in the emoji panel.
  • [Backup & Restore] New! The first sign-in restore experience is now integrated into Windows Backup for Organizations, enhancing the restore capabilities across various device types. This feature automatically restores user settings and Microsoft Store apps at the first sign-in on Microsoft Entra hybrid joined devices, Cloud PCs, and multi-user environments, streamlining the setup process during device refreshes, upgrades, or migrations.
  • [Quick Machine Recovery] New! Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) is now automatically activated for Windows Professional devices that are not domain-joined or enrolled in enterprise endpoint management, providing the same recovery features available to Windows Home users. For domain-joined or enterprise-managed devices, QMR remains disabled unless enabled by the organization.
  • [Taskbar & System Tray]
    • New! A built-in network speed test is now accessible from the taskbar. Users can launch it from the Wi-Fi or Cellular Quick Settings or by right-clicking the network icon in the system tray. This feature opens in the default browser and measures Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Cellular connections, assisting in network performance checks and troubleshooting.
    • Improved: When the taskbar is set to uncombined, only the specific app windows that lack space will move to the overflow area, rather than all windows within a set. This adjustment aims to enhance the visual experience of the overflow area.
  • [Accounts] New! A new entry point in the account menu on the Start menu directs users to the benefits page (https://account.microsoft.com/), simplifying the exploration and management of Microsoft account benefits.
  • [Identity & Access Management] New! Windows now supports Microsoft Entra ID group and role SID resolution, enabling the translation of Entra cloud group and role security identifiers (SIDs) into readable names. This allows for the correct display and use of Entra-only groups in file permissions, local group membership, and access control scenarios without reliance on on-premises or hybrid Active Directory identities.
  • [Camera Settings] New! Users can now control pan and tilt for supported cameras directly in the Settings app, found under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras in the “Basic settings” section.
  • [Built-in Sysmon] New! Windows now includes Sysmon functionality natively, allowing users to capture system events that aid in threat detection. Custom configuration files can filter the monitored events, with captured events logged in the Windows event log for use with security applications and various use cases. Note that built-in Sysmon is disabled by default and requires explicit activation.
    • To enable, navigate to Settings > System > Optional features > More Windows features and check Sysmon, or use PowerShell or command prompt:
      Dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:Sysmon

    • To finalize installation, execute the following in PowerShell or command prompt:
      sysmon -i

Note: If Sysmon was previously installed from the website, it must be uninstalled before enabling the built-in version.

  • [Widgets] New! Widget Settings now opens as a full-page experience in the Widgets app, enhancing user interaction.
  • [Desktop Background] New! Users can now set .webp image files as their desktop background through Settings > Personalization > Background or by right-clicking the image in File Explorer.
  • [Search] Improved: The search process icon in Task Manager has been updated to feature a magnifying glass.
  • [Storage Settings]
    • Improved: Several dialogs in Storage Settings have been modernized.
    • Improved: Enhanced performance for scanning temporary files.
  • [Windows Update Settings] Enhancements have been made to improve the responsiveness of the settings page.
  • [Login and lock screens] Reliability improvements have been implemented for the login screen.
  • [Nearby Sharing] The reliability of sending larger files has been enhanced.
  • [Projecting] Improvements have been made to the reliability of displaying the project pane after using the Windows key plus P.
  • [Printing] The Windows print service (spoolsv.exe) has been optimized for smoother performance, particularly during high-volume printing tasks.
  • [File Explorer]
    • Improved: The extract all option has been added to the File Explorer command bar for browsing non-ZIP archive folders.
    • Fixed: Addressed an issue where holding Shift and clicking File Explorer in the taskbar, or middle-clicking, might open the current instance instead of a new one.
    • Improved: Enhanced reliability for displaying devices on the Network page of File Explorer.
  • [Display]
    • Improved: Performance enhancements have been made to reduce PC resume-from-sleep time on heavily loaded systems.
    • Improved: For laptops connected to a docking station with the lid closed, reliability improvements have been made for resuming from sleep when connecting to AC power.
  • [Other] A few minor visual issues have been addressed, including those related to the taskbar set to autohide, Windows Security pop-up credential fields, and the print dialog.

Thank you for your continued engagement with the Windows Insider Program.
