Windows 11 New Build Adds Screen Tint, Voice Isolation, and Plug-and-Play Braille Display Support

Microsoft has unveiled the Windows 11 Insider Experimental Preview Build 26300.8497, showcasing a suite of new accessibility features designed to enhance user experience. Among these innovations are a Screen Tint option, Voice Isolation in Voice Access, and significant upgrades to both Magnifier and Narrator. Additionally, this update addresses numerous issues reported in previous builds.

New Screen Tint Accessibility Setting in Windows 11 Build 26300.8497

The introduction of a new Screen Tint setting provides users with a color overlay that spans the entire display, aimed at reducing screen brightness. Microsoft describes this feature as particularly beneficial for individuals who experience eye strain or light sensitivity during prolonged usage. Accessible through the Settings menu under Accessibility in the Vision section, users can choose from six preset colors or create a custom tint, adjusting the strength from a subtle wash to full intensity.

It is noteworthy that Screen Tint operates independently of the Night Light feature. While Night Light is designed to minimize blue light exposure to support sleep cycles, Screen Tint focuses on decreasing overall screen brightness to alleviate eye fatigue during daytime use. Both functionalities can be utilized simultaneously; however, users should be aware that enabling Screen Tint will automatically disable Color Filters, and vice versa. Those who rely on Color Filters are advised to keep Screen Tint turned off.

Plug-and-Play Braille Display Support in Narrator

The latest update enhances Narrator’s capabilities by introducing support for refreshable braille displays that adhere to the HID open industry standard. These HID-compatible displays can be connected via USB and function immediately as plug-and-play devices, eliminating the need for additional drivers or setup. Bluetooth pairing is also facilitated through the Settings menu under Bluetooth and devices.

Compatible models include the Orbit Reader 20, Orbit Slate 340, Freedom Scientific Focus 40, and APH Mantis Q40. Notably, HID braille displays can now be utilized during the initial Windows setup process via USB, empowering users who are deaf-blind to configure a new Windows 11 PC independently right from the outset. Preferences for braille input and output can be adjusted in Settings under Accessibility, Narrator, and Braille.

Bug Fixes in This Build and Availability

This build also addresses a range of issues identified in earlier versions. Key fixes include:

  • A recurring crash in explorer.exe that caused the screen or taskbar to refresh repeatedly.
  • The Energy Saver quick setting no longer appears twice.
  • Both Win + X and right-clicking on the Start button in the taskbar now function as intended.
  • An issue that previously led to unexpected audio muting on certain devices has been resolved.
  • Improvements to the reliability of Simple Service Discovery Protocol notifications and enhanced stability for the command dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth.

Build 26300.8497 is currently being rolled out to the Windows 11 Insider Experimental channel. However, Microsoft has yet to announce when these new accessibility features will be made available to the wider Windows 11 user base outside the Insider Program. For those interested, the complete release notes, including known issues, can be accessed through Microsoft’s Insider documentation.
