Google Introduces Play Games Sidekick for Android Gamers
Google has unveiled a new feature for Android users called Play Games Sidekick, which leverages the Gemini AI assistant to help players navigate mobile games without leaving their gameplay. Through voice commands, gamers can ask for tips and strategies from Gemini Live, receiving audible responses while the AI analyzes the on-screen action.
The in-game overlay, presented as a moveable tab, offers access to various tools such as screenshots, screen recording, YouTube streaming, achievements, and game statistics. According to Aurash Mahbod, Google Play Games VP and General Manager, the goal is to provide contextual gaming assistance without the need to search for external tutorials.
Initially, the AI gaming assistant will support select titles from EA and Netmarble, including popular games like “Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes” and “Solo Leveling: Arise.” Google plans to expand compatibility to more games in the near future.
These gaming updates are part of broader changes to the Play Store, including a redesigned Apps tab with AI-powered search capabilities and personalized content spaces. Users can now search for goals like “find a home” instead of specific app names to discover relevant applications.
In addition, Google is launching a unified gaming profile system that tracks achievements and statistics across Android and PC platforms, complete with AI-generated profile pictures. The company has also introduced gaming forums where players can interact directly on game store pages.
The Play Games Sidekick feature bears resemblance to Microsoft’s Gaming Copilot, offering similar AI assistance on Xbox and Windows 11. Google’s PC version of Play Games, featuring a vast library of over 200,000 mobile titles, officially exits beta today after three years of development.
