Google is reportedly buying Android app code from Play Store devs to train AI models

In a strategic move to enhance its AI capabilities, Google is reportedly initiating a program aimed at acquiring actual code from Android app developers. This initiative, described as a “confidential content offer pilot,” seeks to compensate developers for their contributions, thereby creating a mutually beneficial relationship.

According to 404 Media, the tech giant is reaching out to select developers through an email that emphasizes the potential for additional revenue. While the correspondence does not explicitly mention AI, it suggests that the acquired code will be instrumental in refining Google’s developer tools and products. The email states:

“We are reaching out on behalf of the Google Partnerships team with an invitation for a select group of Google Play app developers to join a confidential content offer pilot. We’d like to offer a unique opportunity to generate additional revenue from your apps. You’ve put a lot of hard work into building your app and growing its user base. Whether it’s the active production codebase powering your current app, or archives of prototypes and side projects no longer in use, that code could have untapped value. This is a unique occasion to help transform tools and products, support the developer ecosystem, and unlock new revenue.”

The email outlines the benefits of participating in this program:

  • Additional revenue opportunities: Developers can receive payment for sharing the code that powers their apps, including archived projects.
  • Be an early adopter: As a pilot partner, developers will have the chance to influence how Google collaborates with the developer community in the future.

While human-generated content is commonly utilized to train AI models, typically without compensation, the nature of Android app code presents a unique scenario. This code is generally private and not widely published, making it a valuable asset for both Google and developers.
