Significant Workforce Reductions at Xbox
In a strategic move aimed at revitalizing its operations, Xbox has announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 3,200 employees over the course of the fiscal year ending June 30, 2027. The initial wave of layoffs will see around 1,600 positions eliminated today as the company embarks on a comprehensive “reset” of its business model.
In a candid email to the Xbox team, which has circulated on social media platform X, CEO Asha Sharma expressed concerns about the current state of the business, stating, “our business today is not healthy.” This acknowledgment comes alongside the decision to transition four of Xbox’s studios to new management, a move that reflects a broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency.
Sharma highlighted the financial challenges facing Xbox, revealing that the company is operating at margins significantly lower—by a factor of three to ten—than those of comparable platform and publishing entities. She noted that the anticipated growth of Game Pass and other content offerings has not materialized as expected, prompting a reevaluation of the company’s direction.
Among the studios affected, Compulsion Games, known for its action-adventure title South of Midnight, and Double Fine Productions, creators of the beloved Psychonauts series, will transition back to independent status. They will retain ownership of their intellectual properties, including Contrast and We Happy Few, allowing them to chart their own course moving forward.
Ninja Theory, recognized for its work on Senua, and Undead Labs, developers of State of Decay 3, have also reached agreements to join new ownership structures, securing the necessary funding to further develop their projects. Meanwhile, Arkane’s management is set to enter consultations to explore potential strategic options for the studio.
In a related development, Bethesda is shifting its focus towards its most prominent franchises, including Doom, Fallout, Quake, The Elder Scrolls, and Wolfenstein, as reported by Bloomberg. This pivot underscores the company’s commitment to strengthening its core offerings amidst the ongoing restructuring.
While the email addressed potential further reductions and shifts in investment, it reassured stakeholders that “none of our first-party publicly announced games or projects are being cancelled as part of these reductions.” Additionally, it outlined forthcoming changes in management and a streamlined approach to Xbox’s operational tools.
In response to the news, Compulsion Games took to X to express their gratitude for the support received during this transition, affirming their commitment to their existing titles. Similarly, Double Fine Productions shared their appreciation on Bluesky, promising to provide updates on their future endeavors soon.
This unfolding situation continues to develop, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
