With a plethora of options available, selecting the right security solution can feel overwhelming. Trend Micro, however, aims to simplify this choice by offering five distinct products tailored to various needs.
Recently, I had the opportunity to explore their 12-month subscription to the Security Suite Pro Plus, which boasts advanced multi-device antivirus protection, anti-scam software, a VPN, and identity theft protection. The question remains: is this subscription worth the investment?
Trend Micro Pricing and Plans: Australian Value Guide (Annual subscription)
Trend Micro’s pricing structure is as follows:
- Maximum Security: A – Protection for PC, Mac, Android, and iOS for a single device.
- Maximum Security Plus: A – Includes all features of Maximum Security, plus a VPN and PC/Mac optimization for two devices.
- Security Suite Pro: A.95 – Encompasses all features of Maximum Security Plus, along with identity theft protection and premium support for three devices.
- Security Suite Pro Plus: A9 – All features of Security Suite Pro, plus anti-scam protection for three devices.

Key Features: AI-Scam Detection and Gamer Mode
Among the standout features is the automatic pausing of notifications during gaming sessions. As a gamer myself, I can attest to the annoyance of disruptive pop-ups right before a critical moment in a game. Trend Micro’s ability to manage this automatically is a welcome relief. Additionally, the suite includes anti-track and ad-blocking capabilities, which function effectively without being intrusive. Notably, the software also detects AI scams and deep fake threats during video calls, adding an extra layer of security.
Installation and Setup: A Fragmented Experience?
The installation process was straightforward. After logging into my Trend Micro account, I could download the necessary installers for the antivirus and VPN, running each one separately. However, it was slightly frustrating to have to log in to my account for each program instead of having a centralized app to manage everything. This minor inconvenience feels outdated for 2026, especially for software marketed as a ‘suite.’
Upon installation, I was prompted to run a scan, which revealed several items needing attention. One amusing suggestion was to “improve boot times,” promising a mere 0.01 seconds of savings. While I completed the fix, I doubt I’ll notice any significant difference in my daily life. The initial full scan took just under seven minutes, but subsequent scans were notably quicker.

The entry-level Maximum Security product supports Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android devices, making installation relatively seamless. For instance, I could easily obtain a link to install the protection on my Android smartphone via email, clipboard, or a scannable QR code.
Real-time Defense: VPN and Phishing Protection
Trend Micro’s VPN is a fully integrated solution developed in-house, setting it apart from competitors that often license VPN technology. The suite also includes Trend Micro ID Protection, a mobile app that monitors personal information on the dark web, serving as an effective early warning system, albeit less comprehensive than some premium alternatives. Phishing protection is facilitated through a browser extension, which successfully blocked access to a test phishing page, reinforcing the importance of safety over convenience.
While the suite does not include a dedicated firewall, it enhances the functionality of the Windows firewall, which must be activated for the booster to work. The network protection feature primarily alerts users about potentially unsafe wireless networks, a function I found somewhat redundant, as I already had similar notifications in place.
Maintaining the Trend Micro suite in the background is crucial for real-time protection, as it scans files upon download. This feature proved effective, with unobtrusive notifications appearing when new files were scanned, often without my awareness of the downloads.
Folder Shield: Defeating Ransomware
The Folder Shield feature offers protection against ransomware by securing specific folders on your device. It automatically safeguards your ‘Documents,’ ‘Pictures,’ and ‘OneDrive’ folders, with the option to add more folders for protection.
Lab Test Results: How Reliable is Trend Micro?
Rather than intentionally infecting my devices with malware for testing, I turned to independent labs that evaluate antivirus products. Trend Micro performed reasonably well, particularly in real-time web threat protection and ransomware defense, with minimal impact on system performance. However, it did lag behind some competitors in offline malware detection, which may concern users who risk connecting unapproved devices to their networks. Mixed scores from various labs saw Trend Micro ranking second-to-last in one evaluation and sixth in another, indicating variability in performance.
Verdict: Should You Buy Trend Micro in 2026?
In summary, for most users, Trend Micro presents a competitively priced option that effectively addresses the majority of daily threats. The inclusion of a VPN is a notable advantage, with no issues encountered during testing. A central app to manage all software components would enhance the user experience, but overall, Trend Micro remains a solid choice for online security.
