2025’s most underrated DnD-style adventure just got a huge new update, and if you loved Baldur’s Gate 3 you really need to try it

Among the standout titles released this year, Sunderfolk has captured the hearts of many, including my own. Drawing inspiration from the beloved tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons, it may not rival the expansive universe of Baldur’s Gate 3, but it possesses a distinctive charm and delightful chaos that sets it apart from the myriad of DnD-inspired games that have emerged following BG3’s launch. The gameplay experience is enhanced by the ability to sync your mobile device with a PC or console, creating a relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of a cozy game night. The narration by Anjali Bhimani, known for her work in Overwatch and Apex Legends, offers a more casual tone compared to Amelia Tyler’s impressive narration, adding to the overall enjoyment. For those seeking a straightforward fantasy adventure without the intricacies of a BG3-style quest, Sunderfolk presents an ideal option, especially for players who may struggle to gather friends for an in-person gaming session. The recent update only adds to its appeal.

Gameplay and New Features

If you haven’t yet experienced Sunderfolk, it’s a four-player, turn-based RPG where players unite to choose characters and embark on a quest to save the realm of Arden. The unique aspect of the game is that players control their heroes using their phones, allowing for a variety of adventurer archetypes to form the ultimate band of misfits.

The latest 1.5 update introduces the exciting One Shot mode, enabling players to select specific story missions and compete for high scores. This mode can be enjoyed solo or with friends, allowing for character swaps mid-game to maximize points accrued through enemy defeats, gold collected, lives utilized, and objective bonuses. Additionally, several systemic changes have been implemented, such as the closure of the tavern, which removes food buffs, and a new gear arrangement system. Players will receive a selection of recommended items tailored to each mission, with lower-tier gear for early quests and progressively stronger equipment for more challenging adventures.

Four new missions exclusive to One Shot mode have also been added: Proving Grounds, Snack Run, Slip and Slime, and You Asked for This, each presenting its own level of difficulty. The latter mission was developed in collaboration with the game’s Discord community and features a variety of foes, from Mimics to Revenants. Developer Secret Door emphasizes that “it must be played to be believed,” and I find myself inclined to agree.

Patch 1.5 also includes quality-of-life improvements, such as customizable combat colors and the resolution of various bugs (though I hope the beetles remain untouched, as they add a whimsical touch).

Sunderfolk patch 1.5 is now available, and players can try the game for free on Steam. Only one person needs to own the game, making it easy to share the experience and costs with friends. You can download Sunderfolk here.
