‘Blockchain-powered’ game storefront reportedly shutting down and taking customers’ games with it

The concept behind Robot Cache was intriguing: envision a digital marketplace akin to Steam, where users could resell games after completing them, all underpinned by blockchain technology. Launched in 2018, the platform aimed to disrupt the gaming industry with its innovative approach. However, recent developments suggest that the venture has not achieved the anticipated success.

Closure Announcement

A Reddit user, kallreven, has shared a screenshot of an email allegedly from the Robot Cache team, announcing the closure of the store. The message expresses gratitude for the community’s support but acknowledges the inability to build a sufficient user base and sales momentum to sustain operations. “Thank you sincerely for joining us on this journey,” the email states, highlighting the difficult decision to shut down the store.

Reports indicate that the storefront has been largely inactive for some time. The platform’s X account has not posted any original content since 2023, and its Discord server appears to have dwindled to just one remaining moderator. This moderator, known as eazykiller, noted in a post last May that it seems none of the original team members are still involved with the company. “Shortly after launch, most of them quit, and not even we mods got any communication from the company side since years,” they remarked.

Financial Struggles

Robot Cache’s ambitious beginnings included a goal of raising million through a token generation event, but it reportedly fell short by million, according to a 2018 report from GamesIndustry.biz. Founded by inXile head Brian Fargo, who had initially expressed optimism about the platform, Robot Cache even secured a partnership with AMD. Despite these promising starts, the project struggled to gain traction.

Recent financial disclosures reveal the extent of the challenges faced by Robot Cache. A 2025 report available on the company’s website indicates that the storefront generated a mere 2 in revenue from game software sales in 2024. Additionally, as of December of that year, the company reported an accumulated deficit exceeding million.

As the gaming community reflects on the rise and fall of Robot Cache, the story serves as a reminder of the complexities and uncertainties inherent in the rapidly evolving digital marketplace.
