David Brevik, creator of Diablo, reveals the ‘worst ending’ to any game he’s played: ‘But I really love the game. It’s amazing’

In the realm of gaming, few figures are as storied as David Brevik, whose journey began long before the IBM PC made its mark. Brevik’s early experiences with games like Lode Runner and The Oregon Trail on the Apple II laid the foundation for a career that would see him co-found Condor, where he would eventually pitch the now-iconic Diablo to Blizzard Entertainment. This collaboration transformed into a legacy, with Diablo becoming a cornerstone of the action role-playing game genre.

Currently, Brevik serves as President of Skystone Games, a company that has brought titles such as Tiny Bookshop and Mistfall Hunter to life. Yet, amidst his busy schedule, he took a moment to explore the depths of his Steam library, revealing insights into his gaming preferences and habits.

What game are you currently playing?

Interestingly, Brevik finds himself revisiting an old project: Marvel Heroes, an action RPG featuring beloved Marvel superheroes. “I initially joined the company as a creative director, but over time, I became the CEO,” he explains. Despite stepping back from direct involvement, he remained engaged with the game until the company ultimately shut down, leaving a significant chapter of his career unplayable.

Brevik also enjoys Minecraft, often playing with family and friends. “It’s a great way to connect, especially now that my kids are grown,” he shares. He also has a fondness for No Man’s Sky, having invested over 400 hours into the game. “I love space games,” he admits, highlighting the thrill of exploring galaxies, building bases, and engaging in dogfighting-style combat, despite feeling disconnected from the game’s narrative.

What game will you never, ever uninstall?

Among the titles that have left a lasting impression on him is EverQuest, a game he still revisits regularly. “I have thousands of hours logged,” he reflects, recalling the shared experience with his wife during their years of gameplay. Brevik even indulges in EQ ’99, a nostalgic version of the original game. “It may not be the prettiest game today, but it was revolutionary at the time,” he notes, reminiscing about the challenges and triumphs of his adventures, including a particularly memorable dragon run that turned into a comedic disaster.

What’s a piece of non-gaming software installed on your PC that you simply couldn’t live without?

Brevik’s passion for programming remains strong, with Visual Studio being a staple on his PC. “I still work on prototypes almost every day,” he states, expressing a desire to create new games when time allows. His ongoing commitment to game development is evident, even amidst the demands of his current role.

Generally, how tidy is your desktop screen?

When it comes to organization, Brevik’s desktop tells a different story. “It’s a complete mess,” he admits, with icons for games, development tools, and notes scattered across the screen. “I probably have about 300 icons,” he confesses, illustrating the chaotic yet creative environment that fuels his work and passion for gaming.
