Developers behind SharpEmu, an experimental open-source PS5 emulator, have made significant strides by achieving playable frame rates of 60 FPS for select PS5 titles. This milestone, announced in an X post on September 25, highlights the emulator’s potential, as it has successfully run six out of 55 tested games at this impressive performance level. While these six titles are currently deemed playable, the developers caution that they have yet to undergo comprehensive testing from start to finish, and minor graphical or audio issues may still be present.
Details of the Breakthrough
The six titles that have reached the 60 FPS mark include:
- Dreaming Sarah
- Void Terrarium
- New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja
- Tetris Forever
- Hoa
- Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered
This achievement comes with the release of SharpEmu v0.0.4-release.2, the latest public build, which incorporates enhancements such as improved SPIR-V shader translation and updated Vulkan API support. The emulator is compatible with Windows, Linux, and macOS, utilizing Vulkan and MoltenVK for graphics API calls.
SharpEmu’s architecture takes advantage of the PlayStation 5’s AMD Zen 2 x86-64 CPU, allowing it to execute the console’s CPU instructions natively on standard PCs. This approach eliminates the need for translating instructions from a different set, streamlining the emulation process. The emulator focuses on loading a game’s eboot.bin executable and necessary system modules, while also managing kernel functions and processing graphics submissions.
Despite this progress, SharpEmu remains in its developmental phase, with only 12 of the 55 tested titles achieving a game-ready state. Of these, only six have been designated as playable at a full 60 FPS. The developers emphasize that SharpEmu is intended for research and educational purposes, clarifying that the project does not include any copyrighted system firmware, game data, or proprietary PlayStation assets.
In a related development, another emulator, KytyPS5, has demonstrated the ability to run the PS5 version of GTA V at approximately 40 to 60 FPS on a high-end Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Radeon RX 7900 XT setup, although it encountered crashes after the game’s opening mission.
