Android Auto is set to elevate its functionality with a suite of innovative features designed to enhance user experience. With over 250 million vehicles already equipped with this software, the anticipation surrounding its upcoming redesign in 2026 is palpable. Senior Director of Product and User Experience, Guemmy Kim, recently unveiled plans that promise to redefine how drivers interact with their vehicles.
Visual redesign
The most striking change will be a comprehensive visual overhaul of the Android Auto interface. Kim describes this transformation as a “full refresh,” introducing personal design elements, glanceable widgets, and edge-to-edge Google Maps integration. This update leverages the Material 3 Expressive Google design system, which introduces vibrant designs, animations, and a variety of fonts and wallpapers. The result is an interface that feels more dynamic and tailored to individual preferences.
One notable enhancement is the expansion of Google Maps, which has historically struggled with screen aspect ratios, often leaving unused space. The new design aims to provide a customized GPS experience across various screen types, including ultra-wide and uniquely shaped displays. While some interface elements may still be confined to a designated area, the broader map background is expected to enrich visual navigation and create a more intentional user experience.
Widget support
In addition to the visual updates, Android Auto will introduce widget support, allowing users to incorporate interactive applications directly onto their dashboard displays. This feature promises a revolutionary shift in how drivers interact with maps, moving away from traditional 2-D views to a more engaging 3-dimensional perspective. By showcasing buildings, overpasses, and bridges as 3-D structures, this new mode aims to provide a clearer understanding of the terrain and its relationship to the vehicle. Particularly beneficial for urban driving, immersive navigation will display critical information such as lanes, traffic lights, and stop signs, allowing drivers to anticipate maneuvers with greater ease.
New audio and video features

Users will soon be able to watch videos from platforms like YouTube directly on their car screens, a feature that has long been sought after. Kim confirmed that this capability will be available in supported vehicles, delivering crisp 60fps full HD content. To maintain safety, the system will transition to audio-only mode when the vehicle is in motion, allowing users to enjoy podcasts and news without distraction.
In addition to video capabilities, popular media apps such as YouTube Music and Spotify will receive visual updates aimed at improving usability while driving.
Gemini Intelligence integration
As artificial intelligence continues to shape technology, Android Auto is embracing Gemini integration to enhance its functionality. Users with Gemini on their smartphones will gain access to its adaptive and generative features directly from their dashboard. This includes context recognition and suggested responses, streamlining communication and task management.
One standout feature is the Magic Cue system, which intelligently interprets messages and offers to send relevant replies with a single tap. Furthermore, for vehicles equipped with Google built-in, users can leverage Gemini to access information about their car, such as dashboard symbols and trunk storage capacity. The system will also utilize the car’s cameras for lane guidance in Google Maps, providing real-time advice on lane changes and exits.
