Wear OS 7: New features, eligible smartwatches, and everything you need to know

The recent rollout of Wear OS 7 coincides with the anticipated launch of Android 17 on Pixel smartphones, marking an exciting moment for smartwatch enthusiasts. While this latest version does not represent a drastic overhaul from its predecessor, Wear OS 6, it introduces several noteworthy features that users can either access immediately or look forward to in the near future.

Wear OS 7 is available for smartwatches currently operating on Wear OS 6. Notably, future models, such as the Galaxy Watch 9, are expected to come equipped with this update right out of the box. Current devices eligible for the upgrade include:

  • Galaxy Watch 8 series
  • OnePlus Watch 3 (release date pending)

As manufacturers announce their schedules for the Wear OS 7 rollout, updates will be provided to keep users informed.

New Features and Enhancements

Among the most significant enhancements is the introduction of Live Updates. This feature allows users to stay informed about various real-time events, such as deliveries and sports scores, directly through their smartwatch notifications.

Another exciting addition is Remote Media Routing and Per-App Auto Launch. With this update, users can designate specific apps, including YouTube and Spotify, to automatically launch the media player, streamlining the media experience on their devices.

The integration of Android XR Control is also noteworthy. This feature enables users to manage Android XR devices directly from their wrist. For instance, when capturing a photo with connected Android XR glasses, a preview will appear on the smartwatch, enhancing the interconnected experience.

Moreover, the Gemini updates introduce a new Neural Expressive design language, enhancing the user interface’s fluidity. Gemini Intelligence will allow users to automate tasks on their phones from their wrist, tracking progress seamlessly. Additionally, the Personal Intelligence feature will leverage data from connected apps like Gmail and Messages to provide more personalized suggestions.

In terms of customization, Widgets will replace the traditional Wear OS tiles, offering developers the opportunity to create dynamic dashboards tailored to user preferences. Users can even generate their own widgets using natural language commands, making information access more intuitive.

Updates to the Google Contacts app will enhance functionality, featuring an improved search interface and a revamped Favorites list. The Emergency Sharing feature will now allow users to share their location and vital information with emergency services if a fall, car crash, or loss of pulse is detected.

Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the new Wear Workout Tracker, which standardizes the fitness tracking experience across devices by allowing third-party apps to utilize built-in features like heart rate monitoring.

Lastly, users can look forward to Battery Life Improvements, with Google promising up to a 10% increase in battery longevity due to system-level optimizations, translating to additional hours of usage for smartwatches.

One UI 9 Watch

Samsung’s adaptation of Wear OS, known as One UI Watch, is set to evolve with the anticipated launch of One UI 9 Watch. While details remain sparse, this update is expected to introduce a refreshed interface along with new features and customizations. Reports suggest that One UI 9 Watch firmware has already been detected on Galaxy Watch 8 models, indicating that the update may soon be available.

As the Galaxy Watch 9 series is expected to debut in July alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8, users can anticipate the arrival of One UI 9 Watch shortly thereafter on compatible devices.
