Among these updates is a new Gamepad keyboard and the ability to remap the Copilot keyboard key, catering to a diverse range of user preferences.

The KB5044380 update is part of Microsoft’s monthly schedule for optional non-security preview updates, typically released during the fourth week of each month. It is important to note that unlike the cumulative updates released on Patch Tuesday, these preview updates do not include security enhancements.

Users can easily install this update by navigating to Settings, selecting Windows Update, and manually performing a ‘Check for Updates’. As this is an optional update, users will be prompted to confirm their desire to install it by clicking the ‘Download and install’ link.

  • [Copilot key settings] New! Users can now configure the Copilot key on their keyboards. On new devices, this key opens the Copilot app, while signing in with a Microsoft Entra ID directs users to the M365 app. Users have the flexibility to set the key to open a different app or initiate a search, provided the app is in a signed MSIX package, ensuring compliance with security and privacy standards.

Moreover, several additional features are being gradually rolled out and may not be available immediately after the update:

  • [Gamepad keyboard] New! This update initiates the rollout of a new Gamepad keyboard layout for the on-screen keyboard, allowing users to navigate and type using their Xbox controller. Button accelerators enhance usability, with the X button serving as backspace and the Y button functioning as the spacebar.
  • [Notifications] New! Users can now disable suggestions for turning off notifications from specific apps by selecting the ellipses (…) in the notification and adjusting the settings in Settings > System > Notifications.
  • [Start menu] New! The “All apps” section has been renamed to simply “All.”
  • [Narrator]
    • New! A new Narrator shortcut has been introduced, allowing users to press the Narrator key + Ctrl + X to copy the last spoken content to the clipboard.
    • New! The Narrator will now automatically read the contents of email messages in the new Outlook, mirroring the functionality found in the classic version.
