Jonas Martensson: Minecraft figure on LIV Golf and Cleeks role

Having transitioned from the pixelated landscapes of Minecraft to the competitive greens of LIV Golf, Jonas Martensson is poised to reshape the future of his team, Cleeks GC. His journey from the world of gaming to professional sports management is both intriguing and emblematic of the evolving nature of entertainment and competition.

Imagine a scenario where you find yourself in a vast, uncharted terrain, devoid of possessions. You gather resources, construct a shelter, and eventually build a thriving community—all while fending off digital foes. This is the essence of Minecraft, a game that has captivated millions and serves as a metaphor for the challenges faced in the realm of professional golf, particularly amid the ongoing rivalry between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf.

LIV Golf’s outward look

LIV Golf, while often surrounded by controversy, has successfully attracted a roster of high-profile players, expanded its reach to underrepresented regions, and secured significant sponsorships, including a multi-year deal with HSBC. At the helm of this innovative approach is Martensson, the former CEO of Mojang Studios, who now serves as the general manager of Cleeks GC, a team led by ex-world No. 1 Martin Kaymer.

Reflecting on his initial encounter with LIV Golf, Martensson recalls, “My first experience of LIV was a tournament in Bangkok, close to two and a half years ago. They invited me over to play in the pro-am just to experience it. It was never really a discussion of me starting there, as I was still committed to Minecraft. However, after a long lunch with Greg Norman, the former LIV CEO, he welcomed me to the team, and that’s how it all began.”

Cleeks GC boasts a diverse lineup, including Englishman Richard Bland, Poland’s Adrian Meronk, and Dane Frederik Kjettrup. Martensson acknowledges the team’s average age of 37, which rises to 41 when excluding the youthful Kjettrup, indicating a need for future talent development.

Team building

Martensson’s strategy is rooted in a foundational approach to team building. “My focus has been on establishing a strong brand identity, as that will endure beyond the current roster,” he explains. “We recognize that in 10 to 20 years, the players we have today may not be with us, so it’s crucial to create something that resonates with fans.” He notes that interest from top-tier players on the European tour has already begun to surface.

LIV Golf operates with a dual structure, featuring lucrative individual events alongside team competitions that culminate in a grand finale. This team-centric model is seen by many as a unique selling proposition, offering a year-round experience reminiscent of the Ryder Cup.

Martensson, who co-founded Happy Socks before his tenure at Mojang, envisions a future where the team concept becomes increasingly prominent. “We would love to see an event in Northern Europe, perhaps in Germany. Establishing 10 to 11 fixed locations would allow us to cultivate a loyal fan base and expand our reach over time,” he adds. “The team concept is going to be stronger—it’s going to be more prominent—and we might see even more than one team event in the future.”

Martensson homecoming

As LIV Golf continues to diversify its leadership, with figures like Martin Kim from the LA Dodgers and Richard Glover from the ATP Tour, Martensson’s appointment signifies a strategic move into realms beyond traditional sports. His expertise in the gaming industry positions him uniquely to engage a new generation of fans, leveraging the lessons learned from transforming Minecraft into a .5 billion revenue powerhouse for Microsoft.

As Martensson embarks on this new chapter, the intersection of gaming and sports management presents exciting possibilities for innovation and growth within LIV Golf, promising a fresh perspective on how teams can connect with their audiences in an ever-evolving landscape.
