For years, WhatsApp has served as a vital communication tool for businesses of all sizes across the globe. In a strategic move to enhance its utility, Meta is now integrating artificial intelligence into this platform, aiming to transform WhatsApp into an essential workflow software for small and medium enterprises.
Global Launch of Meta Business Agent
On Wednesday, Meta announced the global availability of its customer support AI bot, now branded as the Meta Business Agent, within WhatsApp. This launch follows nearly two years of rigorous testing in countries such as India and Mexico, where AI agents have been piloted to assist businesses in managing customer support through WhatsApp Business.
The Meta Business Agent is designed to streamline various customer interactions. It can efficiently respond to inquiries, recommend products, schedule appointments, qualify sales leads, and, when necessary, escalate queries to human representatives. Additionally, the bot will also be accessible through Instagram DMs, further broadening its reach.
In its continuous effort to enhance functionality, Meta is currently testing a feature that allows the Business Agent to provide daily briefings summarizing overnight chats and offering insights. This capability is being trialed with select accounts across WhatsApp Business, Instagram Pro, Messenger, and Meta Business Suite.
Looking ahead, Meta is exploring additional functionalities for the AI agent, including conducting market research, showcasing product features, managing users’ calendars, and integrating with tools to gather competitive insights. Furthermore, the company is developing a feature that will enable the agent to surface businesses during searches or when sharing contact details in chats.
For larger enterprises, Meta is crafting a platform that will allow the creation of custom agents capable of connecting with systems such as Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee. This initiative is critical for WhatsApp, which has traditionally depended on revenue generated from businesses through messaging services and click-to-WhatsApp advertisements.
To monetize this new AI capability, Meta plans to incorporate the Business Agent into various tiers of its WhatsApp Business Premium subscription. Large businesses will incur charges based on their usage, specifically the number of tokens consumed by the agent.
