Strengthening Teen Accounts with New Safety Updates on Instagram and Facebook

Meta has unveiled a comprehensive suite of updates aimed at enhancing the safety and wellbeing of teenagers across its platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. These enhancements are thoughtfully designed to ensure that teens are enrolled in appropriate protections, while also providing parents with increased visibility into their children’s online interactions.

“Keeping teens safe is one of our most important priorities, and these updates from 13+ content settings across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, to AI-powered age detection and new parental alerts — reflect our commitment to building age-appropriate experiences by default.” – Natasha Jog, Director, Public Policy, Meta, India

13+ Content Settings To Instagram, Facebook and Messenger Teen Accounts Globally

In response to feedback from parents and inspired by movie rating systems, Meta has introduced a new setting aimed at ensuring that teens encounter age-appropriate content by default. Initially launched in India, this feature is now being rolled out globally across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. The 13+ default setting on Facebook is designed to obscure content deemed inappropriate for younger audiences in areas such as Feed and Reels. Additionally, it restricts teens from engaging with Profiles, Pages, Groups, and Events that primarily share unsuitable content. The overarching goal is to curate a viewing experience akin to that of age-appropriate films.

On Messenger, the 13+ default setting similarly limits teens’ access to links leading to inappropriate Facebook content and restricts interactions with accounts that predominantly share unsuitable material.

New AI-Powered Age Assurance Measures to Place Teens in Age-Appropriate Experiences

Meta’s commitment to safety continues with the development of advanced AI technologies designed to identify underage accounts more effectively. This initiative goes beyond simple age declarations, employing visual analysis to assess entire profiles for contextual indicators, such as birthday celebrations or school-related mentions. By evaluating signals across various formats—including posts, comments, bios, and captions—this technology aims to enhance the identification of underage users.

Additionally, visual analysis has been integrated as a new detection method. This innovative technology enables AI to scrutinize photos and videos for visual cues that may indicate a person’s age, which text alone might overlook. Importantly, this does not involve facial recognition; rather, the AI assesses general themes and visual indicators, such as height or bone structure, to estimate age. By merging these visual insights with textual analysis, Meta aims to significantly improve the identification and removal of underage accounts.

New Alerts to Let Parents Know if Their Teen May Need Support

Instagram is taking proactive measures to support teen wellbeing by notifying parents when their child repeatedly searches for terms related to suicide or self-harm within a short timeframe. This initiative is part of the broader parental supervision features being rolled out for Teen Accounts. Currently available to supervising parents in the EU, Brazil, and India, these alerts will begin reaching parents today, ensuring they are informed and can provide necessary support.

Family Center: Manage Your Teen’s Experience in One Place

For parents of teens enrolled in supervision, Meta has introduced the Family Center—a centralized hub for managing their teen’s online activities across Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger. This streamlined approach allows parents to oversee their child’s digital interactions without navigating through multiple apps and settings. To set up Supervision, parents can visit familycenter.meta.com/supervision. In the coming months, parents will also gain access to a comprehensive overview of their teen’s activity across these platforms, including aggregated time spent online.
