Audiotool 3.0 has made its debut, marking a significant evolution of the brand’s collaborative browser-based Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). This latest version introduces real-time multiplayer music creation capabilities, accessible via web browsers and tablets, with native mobile applications on the horizon.
At the heart of this update is NEXUS, an innovative open-source SDK that empowers musicians and developers to craft their own instruments, plugins, and AI-enhanced music creation tools directly within the Audiotool ecosystem. Daniel Rowland, co-founder and producer of Audiotool, reflects on the challenges faced in traditional studio environments, stating, “I’ve spent most of my life in studios, and the thing that got in the way of creativity was almost never the people in the room. It was the software.” He emphasizes that Audiotool 3.0 dismantles these barriers, enabling seamless collaboration across devices and locations while providing the necessary tools for the future of music production.
While sharing projects has improved over time, obstacles such as device discrepancies, incompatible plugins, and missing files often hinder smooth collaboration. Audiotool aims to eliminate these issues with its revamped platform, which boasts the lowest latency of any online music production tool, allowing users to work together in real time from virtually any device.
In addition to enhancing collaboration, Audiotool 3.0 expands the DAW’s capabilities through NEXUS. Users are no longer limited to built-in features; they can now design their own instruments, effects, visualizers, educational tools, music games, and hardware-connected applications. The SDK also facilitates AI integrations through MCP and Context I/O, enabling creators to link their preferred large language models (LLMs) to the platform.
Andreas Jacobi, co-founder and CEO of Audiotool, draws an exciting parallel: “Think Google Docs meets a creative sandbox like Fortnite or Minecraft. The DAW becomes a platform where creators can build, experiment, and make music together.” He notes that with low- and no-code development tools, individuals who may not identify as developers are contributing fresh perspectives on music creation, shaping the next generation of music tools.
Launch partners for NEXUS include notable names such as Splice, Ujam, BandM8, and Fraunhofer, with Audiotool actively encouraging more music technology companies to integrate their products into the platform. To further foster innovation, the company is hosting its Let’s Build! hackathon series, which runs until August 23.
