Nothing has officially unveiled Nothing OS 5.0, its upcoming major Android software release built on Android 17. This update promises a host of enhancements, including a redesigned visual identity, expanded lock screen customization, improved Glyph Interface controls, fresh widgets, optimized system performance, and a growing suite of AI-powered Essential tools. The announcement was initially teased on X, followed by detailed feature breakdowns shared through community forums. Open beta testing will commence tomorrow, starting with the Nothing Phone 3, while a stable release is anticipated by mid-October.
A cleaner visual identity
With Nothing OS 5.0, the company introduces a refined design language that enhances its visual identity. The primary system typeface, Geist, takes center stage, complemented by a new frosted and translucent material that adds depth and separation to interface elements. While the dot-matrix typography remains, it will be scaled back to accent areas, improving legibility across menus and settings, where brand personality has sometimes overshadowed practical readability.
The update also features a redesigned home-screen theme alongside the existing layout, introducing an adaptive color system that tints app icons, widgets, and Quick Settings tiles based on the dominant color of the wallpaper. This dynamic color adjustment occurs automatically whenever users change their wallpaper. Core apps and interface areas, including the status bar, Settings, Camera, and Gallery, are also receiving updates, such as revised icons and smoother animations, with the Gallery seeing new sorting options and a refreshed album view for quicker photo discovery.
More lock screen customisation
Nothing OS 5.0 enhances lock screen customization with two new clock styles. Gooey features large, fluid shapes to highlight the time, while Micrographics adopts a cleaner, hardware-inspired layout that compactly displays the time, date, weather, and upcoming meetings. Users can personalize the clock faces’ colors to match their wallpaper, extending Nothing’s adaptive theming to the lock screen.
New widgets for collections and digital breaks
Two new first-party widgets are being introduced to promote personal organization and healthier phone habits. Collector allows users to create a visual collection from images captured through the Camera or selected from the Gallery, which can be displayed on both the home and lock screens. Meanwhile, Away Time tracks the time spent away from the phone, showing the current screen-free period, longest break, and weekly offline time trends. Additionally, home-screen editing will become more flexible, enabling users to select and move multiple apps or widgets simultaneously for easier layout organization.
Glyph Interface gets its own app
The Glyph Interface, a signature feature of Nothing phones, receives a dedicated app in Nothing OS 5.0. This centralizes Glyph-related controls, sounds, ringtones, and schedules, simplifying management for users who wish to create specific notification patterns or adjust Glyph behavior at different times of the day. A new Glyph Timer widget will also be introduced, allowing users to start a timer directly from the home screen, with the rear Glyph Interface visually indicating the remaining time.
Faster performance and better Bluetooth controls
Nothing claims to have enhanced touch responsiveness, background app retention, and system resource management. The software prioritizes the active app, minimizing interruptions when memory is limited. On-device intelligence will learn user habits to keep frequently used apps readily accessible, while overnight maintenance aims to optimize memory and sustain performance over time. System animations have been refined across applications, folders, widgets, shortcuts, and multitasking screens. Bluetooth controls in Quick Settings have also been redesigned for easier connectivity with nearby devices, and the Camera app now keeps detected QR codes fixed on the screen for easier access without rescanning.
Essential AI tools become more capable
Nothing is expanding its Essential AI feature set with several practical enhancements. Essential Voice is expected to provide faster, cleaner, and better-formatted transcriptions, accurately determining whether spoken content should be formatted as paragraphs or lists while preserving original meaning. Real-time transcription will display words as they are spoken, and users can capture audio directly through the Ear 3 charging case using SuperMic. Essential Space will gain Smart Collections, which help organize scattered notes, images, and memories by recommending relevant content. Support for Model Context Protocol (MCP) will allow other AI tools to search and read selected data stored in Essential Space, subject to user permissions. The Essential Key will also become more consistent across the lock screen, home screen, and apps, facilitating information capture regardless of the interface. Finally, Essential Apps Builder will allow users to describe, create, and deploy AI-powered apps directly from their devices without coding, enabling easy access from the home screen.

The open beta testing for Nothing OS 5.0 begins tomorrow, with the Nothing Phone 3 leading the charge. A stable version is expected to roll out by mid-October. While the complete rollout schedule for all supported models has not yet been announced, additional devices are anticipated to follow after the Phone 3. However, three older models have reached the end of their promised software support and will not receive the update:
