Capcom has recently unveiled its financial results, highlighting a significant shift in its business model that underscores the growing dominance of digital sales in the gaming industry. The publisher reported that a remarkable 93 percent of its total game sales were digital, a figure that is anticipated to rise as the company moves closer to an almost entirely digital future.
Financial Performance and Digital Transition
On May 13, Capcom disclosed its financial report for the fiscal year running from March 2025 to March 2026, revealing predominantly positive outcomes. The success can be attributed to new titles such as Resident Evil Requiem alongside sustained sales from established franchises like Monster Hunter Wilds. This impressive performance marks the ninth consecutive year that Capcom has set new records across all profit categories. A substantial portion of this achievement can be traced back to the surge in digital game sales, particularly through platforms like Steam.
According to the digital contents section of its FY2026 report, Capcom’s digital sales have seen a significant increase over the past few years. In the last 12 months, digital sales accounted for 93 percent of total sales, up from 90 percent in the previous two years and a mere 75 percent in 2022. This upward trajectory in digital sales illustrates a transformative trend within the company.
Shifting Focus to PC Gaming
A key driver behind this digital sales growth is Capcom’s ongoing commitment to the PC gaming market. In 2022, only 33 percent of Capcom’s game sales were attributed to PC platforms; however, that figure has now surged to 54.5 percent in fiscal 2026. With more than half of its sales now stemming from PC, Capcom anticipates further growth in this segment as console sales begin to plateau.
Looking ahead, Capcom forecasts that by the same time next year, digital sales will reach an impressive 95.5 percent of total game sales. The company views the PC market as a gateway to untapped regions and emerging gaming demographics, moving beyond the traditional console gamer base.
The Future of Physical Sales
Despite the overwhelming shift towards digital, Capcom does not plan to completely abandon physical game sales. While physical sales constituted only seven percent of total sales in the past year, this still translates to over 4 million physical copies sold globally. As the industry evolves, Capcom, along with other publishers, will likely continue to analyze the viability of physical game sales.
While it seems unlikely that Capcom will entirely cease physical game production in the near future, the trend indicates a gradual shift towards limited physical releases, with an increasing number of titles potentially skipping physical formats altogether. This evolution reflects the broader changes occurring within the gaming landscape, signaling a new era for both publishers and gamers alike.
