In the evolving landscape of gaming, the perception of the typical gamer often leans towards the competitive. However, a deeper dive into player behaviors reveals a different narrative, particularly among PC gamers. According to a recent report by market research firm Newzoo, the trend among Steam users indicates a growing preference for noncompetitive, player-versus-environment (PvE) games.
Shifting Preferences in Gaming
Newzoo’s 2025 report, which analyzed gameplay data from over one million players, highlights that in 2024, a striking 58% of games played by Steam users fell into the noncompetitive PvE category. This contrasts sharply with the 42% and 41% of games played on PlayStation and Xbox, respectively. The data underscores a significant shift, as interest in PvE titles among Steam users has steadily increased from 47% in 2021.
While the findings offer valuable insights into gaming preferences, it’s important to note that Newzoo’s panel may not fully represent global gaming trends, particularly in rapidly growing markets like China and India, which together boast over a billion gamers.
Interestingly, Newzoo’s analysis also reveals a correlation between the number of games played and the likelihood of engaging with PvE titles. Players who explore a wider array of games are more inclined to gravitate towards noncompetitive experiences. However, Steam users exhibit a particularly pronounced trend: once they engage with more than one game in a year, their interest in PvE titles surges dramatically, creating what Newzoo describes as a “hockey stick effect.”
This trend may stem from the nature of PC gaming itself. Over the past decade, while PC gaming has become more accessible, it remains a domain largely embraced by enthusiasts. Competitive games tend to attract the widest audience, making them the go-to choice for those who play infrequently. In contrast, PvE games often cultivate dedicated communities, filled with detailed fan wikis and user-generated content, appealing to those who seek depth and engagement beyond mere competition.
For gamers who transition from competitive play to exploring unique and immersive experiences, the PC platform continues to stand out as the premier destination, offering a rich tapestry of noncompetitive gaming opportunities.
