In a recent livestreamed event dubbed the “Android Show,” Google unveiled an array of exciting features set to enhance the Android experience for users this year. Among the highlights is the introduction of the Gemini Intelligence AI system, designed to streamline tasks and improve user interaction with their devices. This suite of upgrades will be rolled out in phases over the next year, benefiting both new and existing high-end Android phones, including popular models from Samsung and Pixel.
Gemini Intelligence
Gemini Intelligence aims to consolidate Google’s leading AI tools into a single, cohesive system that proactively assists users. This innovative technology will enable automation of everyday tasks by interacting directly with existing applications on users’ phones. For instance, it can facilitate ordering takeout, transforming grocery lists into ready-to-deliver shopping baskets, or retrieving class book lists from emails for easy ordering. Users will receive a summary of queued orders for final confirmation before completion.
Starting in late June, the Chrome browser will introduce auto-browsing capabilities, allowing users to automate interactions with websites for tasks like booking tickets or locating parking spots. Additionally, the autofill feature will be enhanced to handle more complex forms by drawing information from various apps and services. Generative user interfaces will enable users to create home screen widgets through simple commands, such as requesting lists of local toddler-friendly events or weather updates for cycling routes.
More Android upgrades
Google’s Gboard dictation system is also receiving an upgrade with a new AI feature named Rambler. This enhancement will refine spoken input into concise sentences, eliminating filler words and errors while seamlessly switching between languages during dictation.
Another notable addition is the Pause Point feature, designed to help users manage distractions from flagged apps. When a user taps on a distracting app, a pop-up will suggest alternatives such as breathing exercises, favorite photos, or more productive applications. Users can also set app timers to limit excessive scrolling.
In a bid to enhance file sharing, Google’s Quick Share feature will expand compatibility beyond Pixel devices to include a variety of phones from brands like Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor. This feature will also allow sharing with Apple devices via QR codes and cloud services, as well as through existing apps like WhatsApp.
Instagram on Android will benefit from new on-device editing tools, including a one-tap smart enhancement feature for photos and videos, as well as a sound separation tool to eliminate unwanted background noise. The platform will also support ultra HDR capture and playback, video stabilization, and night-sight integration. Additionally, a new Screen Reactions feature will enable users to record clips of themselves alongside their screens, creating instant reaction videos for social media.
Lastly, Google has revamped its emoji library, transforming all 4,000 emojis into 3D designs across its Pixel devices and services.
Android Auto redesigned
Google’s in-car system, Android Auto, is set for a significant redesign, featuring smoother animations and bolder visual elements, including fonts, colors, and wallpapers. Users will have the option to add widgets and shortcuts to their car displays, integrating features from Gemini Intelligence for enhanced functionality. Video playback will be permitted when parked, automatically switching to audio-only mode while driving.
The most substantial upgrade comes to Google Maps, which will now offer an immersive navigation experience with a 3D view of buildings, bridges, and terrain. Important navigational details, such as lane guidance and traffic signals, will be overlaid on routes for improved clarity.
New Googlebook laptops in the autumn
Looking ahead, Google is re-entering the laptop market with a new line of devices called Googlebooks, which are positioned as successors to Chromebooks. These devices will incorporate the Chrome browser, support for Android apps, and features from Gemini Intelligence. Manufacturing partners include Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, with various sizes and designs expected.
Each Googlebook will feature a distinctive “glowbar” on the lid, reminiscent of the original Chromebook Pixel from 2015, and will provide seamless connectivity with Android devices. The Gemini system will introduce proactive AI capabilities, including a “magic pointer” that transforms the traditional mouse cursor into an AI-driven tool offering contextual assistance. Further details regarding models and pricing will be disclosed in the autumn.
