To address this dilemma, a new application named C2PA Verify has emerged, designed to assist users in identifying the origins of images. Available on Android, this app is capable of reading C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) credentials, which provide insights into an image’s provenance and editing history. The app simplifies the often complex log of information, allowing users to view details such as the signer, the creator of the image, a timeline of its lifecycle, and raw data if desired.
However, a notable limitation of C2PA credentials is their vulnerability to being erased from images. Consequently, if this data is scrubbed, the app cannot definitively ascertain whether an image is AI-generated or genuine. Despite this caveat, C2PA Verify remains a valuable tool for users. It is open-source, free to use, and developed by Dark Rock Studios, the same team behind the privacy app SnapSafe, which many users rely on daily.
