New Copilot+ PC experiences

Retrace your steps with Recall (Preview)

We are thrilled to introduce the first preview of Recall to our Windows Insider community. Recall offers a novel approach to securely search for items you’ve interacted with on your PC. By leveraging the AI capabilities of Copilot+ PCs, users can quickly locate any app, website, image, or document simply by describing its content.

We encourage you to experiment with Recall and share your feedback, issues, or suggestions through in-experience links or the Feedback Hub. Acknowledgment goes to the researchers and security community whose contributions have been instrumental in shaping Recall. Insiders also involved in this domain are invited to provide insights on Recall’s enhanced security and privacy framework through our Windows Insider Preview Bug Bounty Program.

As is customary with new feature previews, you may encounter known issues, which we recommend reviewing at the end of this blog post.

Setup: After installing this build, the models for Recall and Click to Do will begin downloading in the background. You can monitor the download status via Settings > Windows Update. To access Recall, find it in the Start menu under the All apps list.

The first page of the first-run experience for Recall.

Upon launching Recall, you will complete a first-run experience that prompts you to opt-in for saving snapshots and requires enrollment in Windows Hello for authentication. This necessitates enabling BitLocker and Secure Boot if not already done. If you choose not to save snapshots, Recall will not retain any records of your activity.

Recall with timeline control to revisit past activities on your PC.

Find It: Use your PC as usual. When you need to revisit something previously done, open Recall and authenticate with Windows Hello. Recall simplifies the process of locating documents, websites, or images, alleviating the stress of forgotten tasks. You can search using descriptive clues, such as “pie chart,” or browse through a timeline of snapshots from specific periods. Recall employs AI to deliver both textual and visual matches for your queries. If the results are inaccurate, please provide feedback through the feedback link. Once you find what you’re looking for, you can return to the application, website, or document, or utilize Click to Do to act on any content in the snapshot.

The Recall icon in the system tray indicating active use.

Control: Recall empowers you to manage which snapshots are saved and when. A new icon in the system tray indicates status and provides quick access to Recall actions. When enabled, the Recall icon will be visible, offering visual cues for when snapshots are being analyzed and saved. Clicking the icon allows you to pause saving snapshots or view additional status information.

Deleting a snapshot in Recall.

You can delete any unwanted snapshots and instruct Recall to disregard specific apps or websites in future snapshots, either while viewing individual snapshots or by searching for what you wish to delete.

Windows Hello authentication required for Recall.

Your data: Insiders and Recall users should know that your snapshots remain private. We do not transmit your snapshots to Microsoft or third parties, nor do we utilize them for training purposes. Microsoft cannot access the keys to view your encrypted data, meaning we cannot restore your snapshots if Windows Hello is removed or if you reset your PC. Future updates will introduce options for backing up your keys. Currently, your Copilot+ PC only releases keys for Recall upon verifying your identity through facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN. Please note that during the preview phase, updates may necessitate resetting your saved snapshots, and we will keep you informed of any changes. Technical Insiders can find more information about Recall’s security and privacy architecture here.

Privacy: Recall has been enhanced to detect sensitive information such as credit card details and passwords. When identified, Recall will not save or store those snapshots. We will continue refining this functionality, and if you encounter sensitive information that should be filtered out based on your context, language, or region, please inform us via the Feedback Hub. Additionally, we encourage you to enable a setting that anonymously shares your preferred exclusions from Recall to help us improve the product. You can also choose to exclude specific apps and websites through the Recall settings page.

The Recall settings page for managing snapshots.

Settings: Explore the additional settings available for configuring Recall. Adjusting Recall settings requires authentication via Windows Hello. You can disable snapshot saving, temporarily pause it, filter applications and websites, manage disk usage, and delete snapshots at any time through Settings > Privacy and security > Recall and snapshots. We welcome your feedback on any additional settings that could enhance your experience. If you wish to remove Recall entirely, simply type “Turn Windows features on or off” in the search box on your taskbar, uncheck Recall in the dialog, and restart your PC.

Enterprises: As previously announced at Ignite, Recall is disabled by default on PCs managed by IT administrators for work or school, as well as on Enterprise versions of Windows 11. IT administrators maintain full control over Recall’s availability within their organizations. Employees must opt-in to saving snapshots and enroll their biometric data with Windows Hello for snapshots to be retained. Only the signed-in user can access and decrypt Recall data, ensuring that while enterprises cannot access employee Recall data, they can prevent its use altogether.

Recall (Preview) is now rolling out on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, with support for AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs to follow shortly. As we gradually release Recall in preview, it will support select languages, including Chinese (simplified), English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. Content-based and storage limitations apply. Further details can be found here. Recall is not yet available in all regions, but expanded availability is anticipated over time.

FEEDBACK: Please submit feedback in the Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Desktop Environment > Recall or through in-experience links.
