Stay secure with Windows 11, Copilot+ PCs and Windows 365 before support ends for Windows 10

June 24, 2025

Since its inception in 1985, Windows has aimed to transform the computing landscape, driven by the conviction that technology should be accessible, intuitive, and powerful for all. Nearly four decades later, this vision remains the cornerstone of our mission. Today, Windows stands as the most widely utilized operating system globally, powering over a billion active devices each month. This open and adaptable platform seamlessly connects users, ideas, and innovations, enriching the daily experiences of individuals around the world.

Looking Ahead to 2025

The year 2025 is poised to be a pivotal moment for Windows. The recent CES showcased the vibrant spirit of innovation within the Windows ecosystem, where new technologies and the latest Windows 11 and Copilot+ PCs were unveiled. The momentum is unmistakable, fueled by advancements in silicon technology, thoughtful hardware designs, and on-device AI experiences that encourage users to consider upgrading their Windows PCs. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, 2025 is shaping up to be the year of the Windows 11 PC refresh.

These innovations are not merely enhancements; they are redefining user expectations for devices, both now and in the future. Whether utilizing a Copilot+ PC or accessing Windows 365 in the cloud, our goal is to ensure that users experience the best of Windows 11, with security as a foundational element. We understand that transitioning to new PCs requires careful planning. With Windows 10 support concluding in October, we are committed to providing resources and guidance to help users navigate their options—be it embracing the next generation of Windows, opting for the Extended Security Program (ESU) on their current PC, or transitioning to a cloud-based solution.

Support for Windows 10 Ends in October—Here’s What You Need to Know

As technology progresses, the phase-out of older operating systems and the upgrade to newer versions is a natural evolution. Windows 10, which debuted in July 2015, will see its support conclude on October 14, 2025. Here’s what this entails:

  • Microsoft will cease to provide security and feature updates, as well as technical support for Windows 10 PCs. While these devices will remain operational, they will become increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats due to the lack of regular security updates.
  • Organizations running Windows 10 may face challenges in maintaining regulatory compliance with unsupported software.
  • Applications on Windows 10 may lose support, leading to potential functionality issues as the platform will no longer receive feature updates.
  • Microsoft 365 Appsi on personal and commercial Windows 10 PCs will continue to receive security updates until October 10, 2028, and feature updates through August 2026.ii These updates aim to facilitate a smooth transition to Windows 11.
  • Security Intelligence Updates for Microsoft Defender Antivirus on Windows 10 will be provided until October 2028.

For those currently using Windows 10, checking eligibility for an upgrade to Windows 11 is straightforward. Simply click the Start button, navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, or utilize the PC Health Check app to verify if your device meets the Windows 11 system requirements. Alternatively, consult your organization’s IT team for assistance.

We recognize that your PC is home to invaluable files and cherished memories. To facilitate a smooth transition to a Windows 11 PC, we recommend using Windows Backup—integrated into Windows 10. This tool allows for the secure transfer of data, personal files, and settings, ensuring everything is ready upon your first sign-in.

Security is paramount in Windows 11. Through Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative (SFI), we are continuously enhancing Windows security to protect users, whether on personal devices or managing enterprise fleets. Windows 11 is designed with security at its core, featuring multiple layers of defense activated from day one, eliminating the need for initial configuration.

Windows 11 builds upon the familiar user experience while introducing a modern and secure computing environment. It promises improved performance, streamlined navigation, and the latest features. This operating system is not just designed for today; it is engineered for the future.

  • Security First: Windows 11 is the most secure operating system we have ever created, incorporating advanced security features such as TPM 2.0, virtualization-based security, and Smart App Control—all enabled by default. New Windows 11 PCs have reported a 62% reduction in security incidents and a threefold decrease in firmware attacks.iii
  • Faster and More Efficient: Windows 11 enhances update processes, delivering quicker monthly updates and smaller feature downloads, resulting in faster wake times from sleep mode and improved overall performance. In fact, Windows 11 PCs can be up to 2.3 times faster than their Windows 10 counterparts.iv
  • Familiar Yet Modern User Experience: Windows 11 retains the familiar aspects of Windows 10 while introducing a more modern and streamlined user interface, complete with enhanced multitasking capabilities like Snap Layouts and multiple desktops.
  • Built-in Accessibility Features: Windows 11 offers new and improved accessibility tools, including Focus Sessions to minimize distractions, live captions for audio transcription, and Voice Access for hands-free control.

Windows 10 Extended Security Updates: A Bridge to Your Windows 11 Experience

We understand that transitioning to a new PC can take time, and we are here to assist you throughout the process. The Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program is designed to keep your Windows 10 PC secure after support ends on October 14, 2025. ESU provides monthly critical and important security updates to ensure your device remains protected during the transition. However, it is not intended as a long-term solution, as it does not include new features or technical support.

For the first time, personal Windows 10 PCs can enroll in the ESU program to receive critical security updates for one year post-support. We are introducing additional free enrollment options and a straightforward process to get started:

  • For Individuals: An enrollment wizard will be accessible through notifications and in Settings, simplifying the process to enroll in ESU directly from your Windows 10 PC. Options include:
    • Using Windows Backup to sync settings to the cloud—at no additional cost.
    • Redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points—at no additional cost.
    • Paying USD (local pricing may vary).

Once an option is selected and the on-screen steps followed, your PC will be automatically enrolled. ESU coverage for personal devices will extend from October 15, 2025, through October 13, 2026. The enrollment wizard is currently available in the Windows Insider Program and will roll out to Windows 10 customers in July, with broader availability anticipated by mid-August.xiii

  • For Commercial Organizations: Organizations can subscribe to ESU for USD per device to receive monthly critical security updates for one year, with the option to renew annually for up to three years, with increasing costs each year.ix
  • For Cloud and Virtual Environments: Windows 10 devices accessing Windows 11 Cloud PCs through Windows 365 or Virtual Machines are entitled to ESU at no additional cost, automatically receiving security updates.
