The latest insights from data analytics firm Newzoo reveal intriguing dynamics within the gaming landscape, particularly highlighting the distinct player bases of Roblox and Minecraft compared to traditional AAA titles. During a conversation with GamesIndustry.biz at the GDC Festival of Gaming, Newzoo’s director of consulting, Ben Porter, articulated a notable shift in gaming preferences over the past decade. He noted, “The idea of chasing graphics has kind of faded,” emphasizing that the most popular games today are not necessarily those boasting high graphical fidelity.

Trends in Player Engagement

Roblox stands out as a prime example of this trend, with playtime reportedly increasing by approximately 50% year over year. Among these popular titles, Fortnite emerges with a 55% overlap with Roblox players and a 46% overlap with Minecraft players. Other notable games include Grand Theft Auto V, which shows a 28% overlap with Roblox and 25% with Minecraft, as well as Call of Duty, with 26% and 22% overlaps, respectively.

However, the inquiry extends beyond these live service games. Porter suggests a theory that players may temporarily shift to single-player experiences before returning to their preferred live service titles. Yet, he points out a striking pattern: Roblox players tend to underindex in what the industry typically deems “traditionally good games.” For instance, a player who engages with Roblox is only 0.4 times as likely to play Monster Hunter Wilds compared to the average gamer on PlayStation and Xbox platforms.

Player Preferences and Market Implications

The findings extend to specific console titles that Minecraft players are least inclined to engage with, including Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, and NBA 2K26. Similarly, Roblox players show a disinterest in titles like Monster Hunter Wilds and Hogwarts Legacy. This data suggests that both player groups inhabit their own silos, exhibiting a reluctance to transition to more traditional AAA games.

The demographic profile of these players—often younger and time-rich but cash-poor—further elucidates their hesitance to invest in pricier AAA titles. Nevertheless, Newzoo’s research does uncover some overlap with games outside the top ten live-service category, such as Gang Beasts and Among Us, which resonate with the aesthetics and experiences found within Roblox.

Porter emphasizes the importance for developers to recognize these patterns, particularly given that many of these players are experiencing gaming for the first time. This early exposure may shape their preferences for years to come, raising questions about the future evolution of the gaming audience.
