Google Play Billing Errors Lead to Nearly Double the Cancellations

Shifting Subscription Strategies Amid Billing Challenges

In an evolving landscape where developers increasingly favor subscription models over one-time purchases, the pursuit of steady revenue streams has become a focal point. This transition not only lowers entry barriers for users but also aims to create a more predictable income for developers. However, a significant hurdle has emerged: billing errors on Google Play are undermining this strategy, leading to nearly double the subscription cancellations compared to Apple’s App Store.

The 2025 RevenueCat report highlights a concerning disparity in billing reliability between the two platforms. On Google Play, a staggering 28.2% of canceled subscriptions are attributed to billing errors, while the App Store maintains a much lower rate of 15.1%. Although users unsubscribe voluntarily at comparable rates across both platforms, the prevalence of billing issues on Google Play ranks as the second-largest reason for cancellations, often leaving users without access despite having already made payments.

Retention statistics paint an even more troubling picture. Nearly 30% of annual subscribers across both platforms cancel their subscriptions within the first month. However, the behavior of those who remain varies significantly based on pricing structures. Affordable annual plans boast a retention rate of about 36% after one year, while more expensive monthly subscriptions see a stark drop, retaining only 6.7% of users. The report also notes that 82% of free trials commence immediately after installation, underscoring the importance of instant access and visibility of premium features for effective conversion.

Apple continues to excel in the conversion arena, as the report indicates that the App Store is more adept at transforming downloads into paying customers across various sectors, including business, health, fitness, and education. The billing errors on Google Play introduce friction that Android developers can ill afford, especially when vying for subscription revenue in a competitive market.

While refunds remain relatively uncommon, they do experience spikes in specific categories. Health, fitness, and education apps report refund rates reaching up to 4.9%, typically linked to unmet user expectations. For developers navigating the complexities of Google Play subscriptions, these billing challenges only exacerbate an already intricate monetization landscape.
