Microsoft Corp MSFT has found itself riding the wave of cinematic success, thanks to the phenomenal performance of “A Minecraft Movie,” which has emerged as one of the highest-grossing adaptations of a video game to date. In a bid to replicate this success, the tech titan has forged a new alliance with Paramount Skydance PSKY.
Strategic Partnership with Paramount Skydance
Following its recent merger, Paramount Skydance is poised to channel its resources into developing film franchises that prioritize theatrical releases over streaming options. This strategic pivot aligns perfectly with the anticipation surrounding the beloved video game franchise, Call of Duty, which is set to make its cinematic debut.
In a significant move, Paramount has entered into a film partnership with Activision Blizzard, the gaming powerhouse recently acquired by Microsoft for a staggering billion. This collaboration will see the creation of a live-action film based on the Call of Duty franchise, as reported by Variety. Paramount will take the reins on production and distribution for this highly anticipated project.
Since its inception in 2003, Call of Duty has solidified its status as one of the best-selling video game franchises, boasting over 500 million units sold worldwide. The vast array of games and narratives within the franchise presents Paramount Skydance with a wealth of material ripe for adaptation. Furthermore, there is speculation that this partnership could evolve into a broader Call of Duty universe, potentially encompassing multiple films and television series.
David Ellison, CEO of Paramount, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty, this is truly a dream come true. From the first Allied campaigns in the original Call of Duty, through Modern Warfare and Black Ops, I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love.” The financial specifics of this partnership remain undisclosed.
The Importance of Video Game Adaptations
This latest announcement marks a significant moment in the realm of video game adaptations, especially considering the recent successes that have graced theaters. The past two years have witnessed the emergence of the three highest-grossing video game adaptations, including “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “A Minecraft Movie,” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.”
Paramount has also enjoyed considerable success with its adaptations of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, which has yielded three films and a streaming series. The most recent installment grossed an impressive 2.2 million globally.
Microsoft’s acquisition of Mojang Studios, the parent company of Minecraft, for .5 billion in 2014 has proven fruitful, as the live-action film adaptation of Minecraft grossed 3.9 million domestically and 7.7 million globally. While Microsoft may not have reaped the same financial rewards as the film’s distributor, Warner Bros. Discovery WBD, the company stands to gain from licensing agreements, potential profit-sharing, and an uptick in gameplay for the franchise.
Similar benefits could arise from the Call of Duty film, potentially driving box office success and increasing engagement with future game releases. Prior to its acquisition, Activision Blizzard had already achieved box office success with the 2016 film “Warcraft,” which ranks as the fourth-highest-grossing video game adaptation, amassing 9 million globally. Additionally, the “Skylanders” game was transformed into an animated series for Netflix Inc. NFLX, which is also developing a Minecraft series.
As the owner of the Xbox gaming console and through its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft is strategically positioned to leverage its gaming assets, paving the way for further monetization of its most popular franchises.
