Only in an exceedingly rare 0.01% of cases have I encountered a game that simply wouldn’t run, despite my best efforts.
The statistics support this trend. Steam’s Verified program boasts nearly 9,000 Verified games, a figure that swells to almost 30,000 when including playable titles. These represent the most popular games, and it’s safe to say that only a small fraction of gamers venture beyond this extensive library. If most of your games function well on Linux, this could be a practical workaround. Additionally, some anti-cheat games have alternative ports on different systems you may own. Furthermore, many outstanding multiplayer games are compatible with Linux, including Valve’s own titles like “Counter-Strike,” as well as personal favorites such as “ARC Raiders” and “Helldivers 2.” While the anti-cheat situation on Linux is challenging, expanding your gaming horizons can reveal a wealth of options.
That said, the outlook for anti-cheat measures on Linux appears grim. With increasing restrictions, such as the Secure Boot requirement for “Battlefield 6” in 2025, the landscape may not improve soon. For those using a Linux-based PC connected to a living room TV, robust controller support becomes indispensable. The Steam Machine, a compact PC-console hybrid, exemplifies this success, demonstrating that Linux has surpassed Windows in this arena.
Non-Steam games can still be a pain
While Steam dominates the PC gaming landscape, making it the go-to storefront for most gamers, accessing non-Steam games can present challenges. Fortunately, utilizing a SteamOS-like distribution makes playing Steam games a breeze. However, when it comes to other storefronts, the process can become cumbersome.
Apps like Heroic Launcher simplify the integration of Epic, GOG, and even Amazon Prime games on Linux or SteamOS devices. Yet, adding these games to Steam for easy access in handheld mode can be a tedious task. Installing games manually outside of these storefronts can also be laborious, although this is more of an edge case. Ironically, Windows excels in this area, allowing users to view all their games from a single interface, regardless of the platform. While Linux introduces some friction, the overall benefits often outweigh these minor inconveniences. There’s hope on the horizon, as an Epic Games native Linux app is reportedly in development, which would streamline access to games even further.
You may have issues with some closed standards
Despite its strengths, Linux gaming can still encounter compatibility issues, particularly with proprietary standards. A notable example is HDMI 2.1 support, essential for gamers seeking 4K 120 Hz gameplay and features like VRR. For years, HDMI 2.1 remained unsupported until the HDMI forum allowed for open-source integration into the Linux kernel. However, many users, myself included, have struggled to get it functioning properly. While troubleshooting may yield results, the desire to simply enjoy gaming without technical hurdles is paramount.
This situation illustrates the subtle shortcomings of Linux gaming; Windows users have enjoyed HDMI 2.1 for years, while Linux users face ongoing challenges. Although these issues are not severe enough to compel me to abandon Bazzite for Windows, they are worth acknowledging for prospective Linux gamers.
