Exciting Developments from Mojang Studios
On September 26, Mojang Studios, the Microsoft-owned developer behind the beloved Minecraft franchise, hosted its annual Minecraft Live event. This online broadcast serves as a platform to unveil significant updates, new features, and future projects within the Minecraft universe.
This year’s highlight was the announcement of The Sift, a brand new dimension set to launch next year for both Java and Bedrock editions of the game. This marks the first introduction of a new dimension in over 14 years, joining the ranks of the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. Mojang promises that The Sift will bring a plethora of new challenges, discoveries, and mysteries for players to explore.
In addition to The Sift, Mojang revealed that Minecraft Dungeons II is scheduled for release on September 29. This sequel to the action role-playing game aims to expand the interconnected Dungeons world, offering enhanced character customization, simplified combat mechanics, and cooperative multiplayer options. Notably, players will have the opportunity to delve into The Sift within Dungeons II before its full integration into the main game next year.
Among other announcements, Mojang provided an update on Minecraft World, a UK-based amusement park that was initially unveiled earlier this year. Fans were treated to their first glimpse of this real-world attraction, which will feature an indoor/outdoor coaster named Escape the Nether and a themed hotel designed to immerse guests in the Minecraft experience. Set to open in 2027 at Chessington World of Adventures Resort, this park promises to be a significant addition to the Minecraft legacy.
Mojang also introduced a new initiative aimed at fostering creativity within its community. Chief Creative Officer Jens Bergeström emphasized the studio’s commitment to inspiring and empowering new generations of Minecraft creators by eliminating barriers that hinder creativity.
The Mojang division of Xbox has demonstrated consistent strength over the years, with CEO Asha Sharma noting its role in supporting other divisions within the company. As Mojang now reports directly to Sharma, there is an expectation for increased reinvestment in Minecraft, positioning it as a formidable competitor to user-generated content platforms like Roblox and Fortnite.
According to Bergeström, ongoing improvements to tools and systems are in the works to facilitate easier creation, management, and sharing of game content for creators.
In addition to these major announcements, Mojang shared details about smaller game updates and community features. The next game drop will introduce a new biome: Frozen Caves. This underground extension beneath cold biomes will feature glowing ice crystals, icy hazards, and a new frozen zombie variant.
Mojang also announced the Wilderness Bound community challenge, which follows the Wilderness Bound release and focuses on a forest expedition that unlocks Character Creator items and Java Skins. Furthermore, new Sound Effects Packs are set to launch on the Minecraft Marketplace before the end of 2026.
Lastly, Minecraft is preparing to launch on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for October 27, while the Minecraft: Education Edition celebrates its 10-year anniversary.
