In response to concerns from open-source communities and FOSS developers, Google has pledged to create a workflow that allows experienced users to sideload unverified apps.
While the Play Store boasts an extensive library of applications, several useful options are absent due to marketplace policies. For Android TV owners, now is the opportune moment to sideload six free apps that can enhance the smart TV experience before the new restrictions take effect.
How to sideload apps on Android TV
The Play Store may offer numerous applications for your smart TV, but it lacks some valuable options due to policy constraints. Sideloading comes into play here, although it’s crucial to acknowledge that downloading APKs from third-party sources can increase the risk of encountering data-stealing malware. This is precisely why Google is enforcing stricter policies to safeguard your device.
If you have an APK file ready for installation on your smart TV, start by transferring it to your device. If the file is on your phone, you can use the Send files to TV app to facilitate the transfer. Alternatively, download the APK directly through a browser like TV Web Browser or use a USB drive. Here’s a step-by-step guide to sideload the APK on your Android TV:
- Install the File Commander app from the Play Store.
- Open File Commander and locate the APK file.
- If a warning message appears stating that your TV is not allowed to install unknown apps, tap Settings.
- Under Install unknown apps, toggle the setting for File Commander to ‘on.’
- Return to File Commander and tap the APK file again to initiate the installation.
SmartTube TV

The Leanback Launcher, inspired by Google’s original Leanback interface, enhances performance on Android TVs. This open-source launcher features a minimalist design that prioritizes installed apps over content recommendations.
Leanback Launcher allows users to hide apps, block sponsored content, and customize the display with different colors and backgrounds. Users can easily manage app rows, pin favorites, and adjust the number of apps displayed. However, replacing the default launcher may affect some system features, such as Google Assistant and built-in voice search.
RetroArch
Android TV can serve as a gaming console with the help of RetroArch, an open-source application that emulates classic consoles like PlayStation, NES, SNES, and Game Boy. Users can sideload RetroArch to access a more feature-rich version than the one available on the Play Store, which has not been updated since 2021.
While RetroArch itself is legal, users must possess legal copies of the games they wish to play. Once installed, RetroArch transforms your Android TV into a gaming hub, allowing for the organization and launching of games like a traditional console. It supports gaming controllers and offers customizable button mapping, along with visual enhancements for older games. RetroArch can genuinely elevate your TV into a powerful retro gaming platform.

For those frustrated with persistent ads on their TV, AdAway offers a robust solution. This free, open-source ad blocker requires sideloading and operates by using host files to filter domains. By creating a local VPN on the device, AdAway blocks ads at the device level, providing a more effective solution than DNS filtering.
Once set up, AdAway will continue to filter ads until the app is closed or the TV is rebooted. Although not fully optimized for Android TV, users can navigate the interface with a mouse toggle app, such as Zank Remote, for easier access.

While third-party apps for Android TV are limited compared to smartphones, we prioritized TV-optimized applications that are easy to navigate with a remote.
Additionally, we included restricted versions of Play Store apps, such as RetroArch, which offer more features when sideloaded. Our emphasis was on practical tools that enhance functionality, like Syncler, while ensuring that the apps selected are trusted and community-verified, with active GitHub pages or official websites.
